The Descent of Hughes
| Origins
of the Hughes family The following are images of a piece of paper that has been handed down through my family, being a copy of a document prepared by John Hughes in 1856. These trace the origins of the Hughes family and their descent from Edwin, Prince of Tegiangl (d. 1073). They also show the first person to adopt the Hughes surname. You will see that there are two trees for the Hughes family, one on each piece of paper. The top one shows the descent of Thomas of Pant Gwyn (on the right) from Edwin, Prince of Tegaingl. The bottom one shows the descent of Hugh ap Mwyndeg ('ap' means 'son of') but it looks as though he should be Hugh ap Thomas ap Mwyndeg as shown on the top image i.e. the second image seems to miss a generation, that is Thomas of Pant Gwyn. There are no dates shown and I simply present the information for what it is worth. Please note that there will have been many people called Hugh in Wales at the time when surnames were being adopted whose sons adopted the surname Hughes, so the fact that your surname is Hughes does not necessarily mean that you are descended from anyone shown here. There are many connections here to famous and royal familes e.g. Edwin of Tegaingl, Ednyfed Fychan (companion of Llwewlyn the Great), Tudor Trevor, the Morgans of Golden Grove etc.. It looks as though my branch of the Hughes are descended from Edward Hughes of Ysceifiog shown on the second image; see the notes on that page. There is still a Hughes family at Pant Gwyn, Ysceifiog. On the top image it says 'Madoc Ddu [should be 'Dhu' I think] up to Edwin, Prince of Tegaingl'. I think this line has been published somewhere; it might be in Bartrum's Welsh Genealogies. The top image is the right-hand side, the bottom the left-hand side of the page. If you want to print these pictures, right click on them and select 'Print picture'. You should check that the whole image has printed, particularly the right-hand side of the picture. If not you should reduce the margins via 'File' and then 'Page setup'; I find that a margin all round of 1cm works on A4 paper.
